Saving Grandpa Bill
CHAPTER ONE:
A FEW THINGS TO CONSIDER
OK, superstar! Before we get started, you need to understand this: You don’t get close to four hundred pounds overnight. And you can’t heal your mind and body overnight either. I’d love to tell you there was some magic pill or trick that helped me get motivated, move, and drop pounds, but there wasn’t. My journey to the new me took discipline, perseverance, grit, and more than a little good humor. I found people to help me when I needed direction or encouragement. Still, ultimately, I had to change the way I thought about food, myself, and the value of my life. I had to prioritize my health. The single most significant change that has taken place throughout my health journey is my mindset. The only way I could make the changes I needed and consistently show up for myself and my family was to change the fundamental building blocks of my thinking. I can assure you that was no small feat, because I’d been conditioned to think in specific patterns by my culture, my circle of influence, and society. The truth is that if we allow ourselves to accept the status quo of our society, we will often be less healthy, whole, and happy as a result.
